retouching services

for professional photographers

hey there, I’m janine,

I’m Janine! I’m a tea-drinking, cozy sweater-wearing,book-reading hopeless romantic who adores telling love stories through photographs from all over the world. I’m a dog mom to a crazy black lab, and I spend my spare time playing board games with the love of my life. I’m all about living that hygge, cozy life and I’m a firm believer that you shouldn’t do anything that makes you unhappy – ever.

Welcome

When initially considering the possibility of outsourcing your photographs, you might have a few hesitations – and you wouldn’t be alone!

You, along with many other photographers, are worried that the editor won’t be able to do it as well as you, and have trouble  ‘letting go’ of your work. You might even feel a bit of guilt for letting someone else edit them. I believe that the reason for these hesitations is because you don’t truly know the person editing your photos. While outsourcing companies promise you a personal editor, do you really know them? Can you put a face to their name? Do you know how they run their own business, their values? Or even worse, they give you a different person every time so there’s no consistency whatsoever. What I love most about editing for other photographers is being able to provide a tailored service with open communication. I want you to be able to message me anytime you have a question, concern, or change in editing style. I promise to take just as much care in editing your images as if they were my own. We will work together to create an efficient workflow so not only are you saving your valuable time, you don’t have to worry about passing your photos to a stranger.

By providing you with professional image outsourcing, you’ll gain the most valuable thing in our world today – time. Time to spend with family, time to spend working on other projects, time to spend shooting more of what you love. By working one-on-one with you, I am able to tailor the editing process so you’re not just getting the same ‘basic’ edit that every other photographer gets when using a large editing company. If you have a specific preset that you have developed or use, send it over and I will use the same. Each image will receive the same edits that you do, achieving seamless consistency throughout your work.

essential
$0.50/image

exposure + contrast  /  cropping + straightening  /  colour correction  /  HSL adjustments  /  highlight + shadow recovery  /  noise reduction + sharpening  /  burning + dodging  /  light spot removal in LR  /  B+W conversion

skin retouching
$1.15/image

Includes all of the essential edits above, as well as advanced skin retouching (skin smoothing, blemish and spot removal, colour blending, teeth whitening, redness reduction, stray hair removal, spot removal).

If you would only like a select number of photos (ex. 40 portraits out of an 800 photo wedding) edited with skin retouching, please specify which photos need skin retouching (flagging/colour coding in Lightroom helps with this). Each of these photos will be subject to the skin retouching editing fee, while the rest of the photos will only be edited with the Essential edits.

Many photographers have trusted my judgement when it comes to skin retouching and will let me choose which images I feel need advanced skin retouching. It means that the final cost of each project might be unknown for you, but trust that I don’t want to create more work for myself if it’s not necessary. It’s not for everyone, but it’s always an option if you’d like!

EXTENSIVE RETOUCHING WORK

& additional fees

Certain kinds of retouching are not included in the essential editing or skin retouching fees. I will not do any body modification unless specifically asked. Body modifications, extensive object removal, head swapping, eye swapping, etc. are subject to additional fees which are quoted individually based on the amount of work and time involved. I may need to see the images to assess the edits you’d like to have me make first.

If you require a faster turnaround time, please contact me directly for more information and to see if it would be possible at that time. Rush fees are applicable and are quoted based on the size of the project and how fast you need the images turned around.

additional details

Turn-around time

Each photographer has their own responsibility of managing their client expectations. Everyone's turnaround time is different, and I will do my best to match the turn around times that you have already communicated to your client. Keep in mind that you may need to adjust those expectations going forward for future work. When the images are not in your control anymore, you have less control over the delivery time and need to allow a buffer time. It's always better to over-estimate the time needed! Please keep in mind that I am only one person taking on the workload of many, so my retouching services are not catered toward speeding up your turnaround times, but rather to lessen your workload and allow you more time for yourself.

While I usually work on projects on a first-come, first-served basis, I will prioritize projects that have shorter turn-around times (especially during the busy summer/fall season).  I only take on a limited number of retouching clients per season to allow for everyone's needs to be met without rushing their work or compromising delivery schedules.

File Transferring

Each project, whether working via Smart Previews with Lightroom catalogs or RAW images, will be transferred back and forth through WeTransfer. I pay for the Pro service, so I can send and accept file transfers up to 200GB at once through my personal WeTransfer webpage. More information will be given to you about operating with Smart Catalogs once we move forward with the process!

How do we start?

We start with a complimentary trial to see if we'd be a good fit! I always begin by sending you a detailed questionnaire that will serve as as a technical analysis of your editing style so I can get a feel for your process. I know editing can usually be a very subjective, emotional process. A lot of people (myself included) edit based on the feel of the photo. It helps to look at your work objectively, to take emotion out of it, and notice what key things you're repeating in your process no matter what image you're editing. You'll also send me the following:

• a small selection of RAW images, accompanied by a final edited JPG version of each. This way I can test to see what edits you did to get the final result that you did like, and figure out how to replicate it myself. It's like a super fun matching game for me haha!

• Your chosen presets that you'd like me to edit with (both colour and black & white)

• 5-10 RAW images for me to edit as our complimentary trial

Zip all of these things together in a folder and send it through WeTransfer.com to janine@janinerosephotography.com and I'll get to editing! Once I'm done, I'll send them back and we can have a chat about what you liked, what you didn't, and any preferences you might have. Then we'll be good to go for larger projects!

As with everyone, there's always a bit of a learning curve on both of our ends. I love trying new styles and have edited anything from clean and airy to dark and moody and filmy. It might take a try or two, but if you're still not feeling it, let me know! I promise you won't hurt my feelings. And I'll be honest too - if I don't feel like I can give you what you need, I'll tell you! I'm not for everyone and I know that's okay.

Do I need to sign a contract?

I do ask for a contract to be signed. It does not lock you in for a certain amount of time, but simply outlines expectations on both sides right from the start!

Sound good to you?

Send me a message and we can get started! I’d be happy to arrange a video meeting (or meet up for coffee if you’re in edmonton). I look forward to working with you to give your images that personal touch!
